In the winding lanes of Old Manali, tucked away between cafes and cedar trees, there’s an unmistakable hum in the air. Not from traffic or the usual tourist chatter, but from the electric buzz of creativity, of skin meeting ink in intimate transformation. And at the heart of it all is Veronica, also known as Radha—a tattoo artist whose work goes far beyond design. With seven years of experience under her belt, Veronica is redefining what it means to tattoo: not just as art, but as ritual.
A Journey Written in Ink
Veronica’s story isn’t one that follows a conventional path. There’s no single moment of “arrival,” but rather a flow of continuous discovery. “My art form is still developing,” she says, her voice grounded but open. “I really enjoy doing Indian Ornamental style of work and a lot of freehand floral stuff. It’s organic, evolving—just like the people I tattoo.”
She didn’t become a tattoo artist for the trend or the thrill, but because there was something sacred about putting permanent art onto human skin. For her, it’s not just about ink—it’s about intention.
Each piece she creates is freehanded, designed uniquely for the person sitting in front of her. Most of the times no stencils, no repetitions. “Every tattoo is unique,” she shares, “just like you and your personality.” It’s this approach that sets her apart in a world where copy-paste culture has seeped even into the sacredness of skin art.
Freehand, Freespirit
Veronica’s specialization in freehand tattooing means that she doesn’t draw on paper first. She works directly on the body, letting the energy of the moment and the vibe of the person guide her hand.
She often blends intricate Indian ornamental motifs with nature-inspired elements like flowers, vines, and celestial symbols. “I love how flowers and patterns can adapt to the curves and edges of every body,” she explains. “It’s like the skin tells me how it wants to be adorned.”
Working without a pre-made design requires a deep connection between the artist and the canvas. It's intimate. It's intuitive. And it’s deeply personal.
This is where her spiritual side comes in. “Tattoing is a ritual. And I would love to practice it the same way,” she says. “Because that’s how it should be. I’ve already started working towards it, and it will go only higher from here on.”
An Artist, A Teacher, A Traveler
Veronica is not just a tattoo artist. She's also a teacher and a wanderer. She shares her wisdom in art workshops and retreats, helping people tap into their own creative energies through drawing, painting, and yes—tattooing.
Whether she’s guiding someone in sketching their first mandala or helping them connect to their inner artist through journaling and color, she holds space for exploration. “Art and love,” she says with a smile, “these are the two things keeping humanity alive. That’s our only hope and answer to literally everything.”
She’s taught everywhere from Himalayan hideouts to beachside art camps, and with every retreat, she sees how art opens people up—softens them. “It’s never just about art,” she explains. “It’s about healing, connecting, remembering who you are.”
Living on Her Own Terms
When asked about her biggest achievement, Veronica doesn’t list awards, magazine features, or celebrity clients. She doesn’t need to.
“My biggest achievement is that I am an artist,” she says. “And that I live my life on my own terms and I have been able to share whatever I have known till date with others.”
And in a world that often tries to shape women, especially artists, into something more palatable—more profitable, more predictable—this statement is a revolution.
She’s turned her lifestyle into a canvas of authenticity, where mornings start with sketchbooks and incense, and afternoons blend into sessions with clients who often leave with more than just a tattoo. They leave with stories, intentions, and sometimes even tears of release. Because that’s the space she creates: one of transformation.
Beyond the Surface: Tattooing as Ritual
Veronica's vision for the future is clear. She wants to bring tattooing back to its roots—as a rite of passage, a ritual, a sacred moment of marking change, identity, or intention.
“In many ancient cultures, tattoos were spiritual,” she explains. “They were blessings, protections, transitions. We’ve forgotten that. But I want to bring it back.”
She’s already begun incorporating rituals into her sessions: breathwork before tattooing, intentional conversations about what the tattoo means, sometimes even herbal teas to calm the nervous system. “People often cry in my sessions,” she says. “Not because it hurts—but because something inside them shifts. That’s the power of ritual.”
The Message to Aspiring Artists
To young or aspiring artists looking to walk a similar path, Veronica offers words that are both grounding and radical:
“Choose art because you want to add to it—because you want to make life better, not just for personal gains,” she says. “Know that as an artist, you hold a responsibility towards society and the world. You’re a mirror, a healer, a storyteller.”
And perhaps her most powerful advice?
“Be a good human above everything else.”
In her words, there’s no ego—just clarity. Just love.
The Legacy She’s Building
Veronica’s legacy isn’t being built in galleries or billboards. It’s being written on the arms, backs, and hearts of the people she tattoos. In the workshops she holds. In the community she nurtures around her.
It’s a legacy of ritual and rebellion, of beauty and bravery, of living gently and fiercely at the same time.
She may be based in Old Manali, but her energy moves far beyond the hills. Because when art is done with intention, it becomes timeless.
So the next time you find yourself in the mountains, listening to the rustle of pine trees and the hum of something unseen, know that somewhere nearby, a story is being inked. One line at a time. One soul at a time.
And Veronica—Radha—is holding the pen.
